Sartène
The Corsican Village

An Evocation of Sartène ...
With its surroundings Sartene seems to be an extrusion of the mountain.
Forget the recent buildings to only see this acropolis of granite which
clings on to the rock.
In the centre of the city is the Square of the Libération, formerly
place Porta.
There the guillotine stood. There, men of "good birth", the
sgio, talked together.
At the foot of the church, from the dawn, the farm workers were waiting
for job offers.
For Sartene, was in the past, of all the corsican urban areas, the most
retrograde.
The social relations in the isle have never showed the inequalities which
were noticed in Sicily or Sardinia. The mountainous nature not much permitted
the properties of latifundia and the large agricultural fortunes.
Nevertheless, in sartene, the social relations kept for a long time their
aspect of inequality of the 18th century.
We adressed the sgio, the cap in the hand and with downcast eyes..
[...] The old quarter of Petraghju seems to slide toward the valley, carrying
along with it its floods of history.
The houses jostle each other, linked between themselves by arches. Separated
by narrow alleys, they raise toward the light, changing themselves with
the further stories .., and centuries : here the stone is different between
the first and second level, there, this turret is posterior to its support.
Sometimes, we come across the ruins of the ancient rampart.
For, behind these walls, what a lot of wars, passions and cruelty : genoese,
corsican, barbary coasts fought and died there.
