The Archaeological Museum LICNICOI
in Albertacce

Head of Ponte-Altu [ Ph. Acquaviva
]
The archaeological museum LICNINOI, most recent of the corsican museums, has authority
to the study and the collecting of all the archaeological vestiges of the high
corsican mountain.
Managed by the Archaeological Society of the Corsican Centre and by the
Association of communes authorities of the Niolu, it sets up by the Bastia
- Porto roadside.
The term Licninoi is the name that greeks of the Antiquity gave the inhabitants
of the valley of the Niolu .
All the times have succeeded.
The earliest one is represented by the Ancient Neolithic (5 thousandth years
B.C).
This period was a peacetime, which was gradually disturbed by the arrival on
the coasts of new groups which drove back the populations already settled toward
the inside. The last mentioned, chose the most easily defensible spaces, in
this case the high valley of the Niolu, surrounded on all sides by high mountainous
barriers and then easily controllable on its two natural entrances : the Scala
di Santa Regina and the Bocca di Verghiu.
It is at the time of the Recent Neolithic that the population aims to multiply,
get itself organized and to put in state of defense the hills and the rocky
spurs (Marze, Castelle, Capu di u Castellu).
At the same time, was introduced into the Niolu, the cultural megalithic movement,
which was witnessed of the vitality of a region which, despite the handicap
constituted by the geographical isolation, has known how to receive and adapt
the new facts of civilization. The statues-menhirs of the Cumadoghja, the sepulture
of Sovezzia (reconstructed in the museum), are the account of this.
In the Iron Age we are witnessing a standardization of the ceramic decorations,
generally with the cordon in relief, impressed or not, and the choice of less
high houses (Castellu Rossu), that is the sign of an evident return to a pacific
phase.
This time has bequeathed us a magnificent sculpture : the Head of Ponte-Altu
[ cf. Picture ] whose the perfect execution is similar to the works of classic
contemporary civilizations.
It corresponds to a unique case in Corsica.
The high altitude of the Niolu has restricted the possibilities
of farms and so it is a region which is certainly destined to the breeding and
to forestry development that the high valley was in the prehistory.
The interest of the Licninoi Museum is also to present, as
a comparison, archaeological equipment coming from the sites of plains (Stazzo),
or from regions of contact between the valleys (Castifao, Corte).
