The Arts and some History

From the Megalithic and "Torreens" sites in passing by the Churches of Pisa, the numerous Genoese works, the citadels, towers and bridges, History has left in Corsica a vast number of monuments and works of art without forgetting the island art (ways of cross, wooden pulpits).

The Prehistoric Sites

• Filitosa 8000 years of History
  The nearness of the fertile plain of the Taravo, the presence of a hut which easily can be converted and of many shelters under the rock predisposed the site of Filitosa to a very long occupation, from the 5th millenium B-C to the roman occupation.

  In the 2th millenium B-C, the stone-cutterts, the megalithic sculptors made of Filitosa the biggest centre of corsican and mediterranean statuary art..

  Filitosa, 8000 years of history and mystery, jealously keeps its statues-menhirs, its circular monuments and its secrets.

  We are continually questionning ourselves about the "Torre".
  What was their destination ?
  Which cult practiced men in Filitosa ?

  Here in Filitosa one of the richest archaeological adventures in teaching on the corsican history, was born in 1954 thanks to the discoverer of the site Charles-Antoine Cesari.

The Churches from Pisa

The harmonious simplicity of the romanic churches built by Pisa after having received the charge of the corsican dioceses attest an accomplished art. These churches, of a modest size, are framed by a landscape in which they seem to live in since always.

The Genovese Works

• The Citadels
  The foundation by Genoa of towns like Bonifacio, Calvi ou Bastia et Ajaccio has been accompanied with the building of citadels bristling with ramparts which protected the trading activity of these cities.
• The Towers
  On the initiative of the financiers of the Saint-Georges Bank and in front of the danger of the Barbary Coasts attacks, a system of several hundred towers situated on headlands on the coast side, was built during the 15th and 16th centuries.
• The genoese, narrow Bridges, spanning with only a simple arch the smallest rivers that they generously overhang with their narrow silhouette, still offer their crossing on many roads or ways like the Bridge of Ota, near Porto.
